Andrew the first called

April 28, 2020

Good afternoon,

" Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John [ the Baptist ] had said, and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him…. " John 1:40-41

Andrew was the first disciple called to follow Jesus. He was a younger brother to Simon Peter because Simon is always said first ( the older sibling is mentioned first ), when the two are introduced. Andrew was a fisherman before he met Jesus. He is at some of the big events in the life of the disciples, but does not say much of anything. We do not hear about him in Acts, but there was a small pamphlet written about him in the 3rd century. Like all disciples/apostles he became a saint in the church. Constantinople ( now Istanbul ) was the capital of the Roman Church, and Andrew was its patron saint. As with his brother Peter, he was crucified.

Andrew seems to play a minor role compared to his brother Simon. I wonder how he felt about that. Maybe it did not bother him, and he enjoyed being behind the scenes. He may have enjoyed listening to the teaching of Jesus, and watching the miracles performed by Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth. He , along with others, are quoted as asking questions to Jesus.

What questions would you have liked to ask Jesus while he was living ? What questions are you asking Jesus today ? Are they different from yesterday ?

Prayer for Today

Come and see, light for our eyes

Be the air we breathe, be the voice we speak

Come and be the song we sing, be the path we seek.

Your life was given, food for all people.

Body and blood, new life in our midst

Death is no longer, life is the future

Jesus, Messiah, name of all names.

Salaam, strength and peace for the journey through these difficult times,

Fred

Tread on bold new paths

Fireflies flash for direction

" Hope springs eternal
